The Us Government Has Said It Will Appeal After A High Court Judge Ruled That Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Should Not Be Extradited To The Us

Julian Assange extradition: US to appeal after High Court ruling

The US government has said it will appeal after a High Court judge ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should not be extradited to the US.

Mr Assange, 50, is wanted in the US to face 18 charges, including conspiring to hack into a US government computer and violating the Espionage Act.

But the judge ruled that Mr Assange should not be extradited because he is at risk of suicide if he is held in a US prison.

The US government has said it is "disappointed" with the ruling and will appeal.

Mr Assange has been held in Belmarsh prison in London since 2019, after he was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

He was due to be extradited to the US in May 2023, but the extradition was blocked by the High Court.

The judge ruled that Mr Assange's mental health was too fragile for him to be extradited.

The US government has now said it will appeal the ruling.

A spokesperson for the US Department of Justice said: "We are disappointed with the High Court's decision not to extradite Mr Assange to the United States.

"We will continue to seek his extradition so that he can face justice for the crimes he has committed."
